Both teachers who are new teachers, and experienced teachers can begin the new academic year by reflecting on their previous year of teaching. Did you meet your professional goals and how did your students perform come results day? These may all be points to consider before moving on to a new year of teaching.
Rediscover your Passion for Teaching
Treat the new academic year as an opportunity to start with new energy and a renewed passion for teaching. Perhaps you are a new teacher who is ready to take on the challenges that come with taking on more responsibility after becoming a newly qualified teacher. Or perhaps you have taught for many years and need to reassess why you got into teaching to begin with and how you can continue to make a real difference to the education of your students. The new academic year gives teachers the opportunity to set new professional and personal goals and new targets for their students. Think about revising your previous lesson plans and trying out new strategies in the classroom.
Get organised and Plan Ahead
Inset day gives teachers the opportunity to get ahead of students after the summer break. It is recommended that teachers familiarise themselves with their new teaching schedule and get their lesson planning and classroom in order before teaching begins. After the first week, teachers find themselves settling back into their school routine, just as students do. Think about your work life balance and schedule your preparation work around your personal life in the best way that works for you.
Focus on Your Professional Development
Think about your professional development as a teacher. Consider other departmental opportunities and leadership roles depending on where you are in your teaching career. Perhaps there is an opportunity to take on intervention for students or progress beyond your teaching role within the school you work in. Find out more about any additional training or resources that can be made available to you by the school to enable you to thrive in your teaching career and make a positive impact on all students, including those with additional learning needs.
